Second STEP

For the 2nd year in a row, classroom teachers are using the Second Step social skills curriculum to directly teach students the competencies to strengthen their ability to learn, have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems. This program promotes school success, connectedness, and a safe/respectful school climate by developing student’s self-regulations skills, social-emotional competencies, and school connectedness.

The focus for November/December 2019 is EMPATHY. Being able to feel or understand what another person is feeling prepares students to manage their own strong emotions and solve interpersonal problems with others. This program teaches students skills for identifying emotions in themselves and others, labeling these motions and taking the perspectives of others. These skills are the basis for helpful and socially responsible behavior.

The documents below contain Key Concepts and Key Words that will be taught and used throughout the months of November and December. In addition, there are worksheets that can be downloaded and completed by families at home to reinforce the skills being learned.
